We meet in Piazza Santo Spirito, the square that locals treat as their shared living room. Café terraces line the edges, the facade of the basilica closes the view, and the pace is slower than in the historic center. Here we set the scene for the district and the food culture we are about to taste.

Full Description
Florence reveals its true character in the streets of Oltrarno and San Frediano, where artisans, families, and neighborhood cooks still set the daily rhythm. Our food and wine tour follows that rhythm on foot, moving from one local table to the next with a guide who knows the shopkeepers and the families behind them. The tastings are generous, so this route comfortably replaces lunch or dinner.
We begin in Piazza Santo Spirito, the living room of the Oltrarno, where the morning light falls on the square and its café terraces. A short walk brings us to an artisan bakery for a tasting of schiacciata fiorentina, the thin, golden flatbread that Florentines eat at any hour. Nearby, we stop before the Basilica of Santo Spirito, whose plain facade hides one of the neighborhood's most elegant interiors, and we trace its story before moving on.
Our route then turns to the small details that make this district special, including the wine windows of Via Santo Spirito. We sample a glass the old way, straight from the wall, then continue to Piazza del Carmine, framed by the Carmine church and the workshops that give San Frediano its working character.
Two restaurants anchor the day, each chosen for the way it cooks rather than the way it advertises. We sit down to first and second courses paired with local wines, and meat lovers can taste a genuine Fiorentina, the thick T-bone served rare as tradition demands. Between courses, the conversation moves between recipes, markets, and the daily habits that keep this food culture alive.
The sweet finish comes from two addresses we return to often: an artisan pastry shop for traditional pastries, and a gelateria in Borgo San Frediano for gelato made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. We close at the medieval walls and Porta San Frediano, at the edge of the old city, with the neighborhood still in view behind us. The tour runs as a private experience or as a small group, and the walking pace stays easy throughout.
