Itinerary

• 1st stop

  Piazza dell'Unità Italiana

  We meet beside the obelisk of Piazza dell'Unità Italiana, a broad square a short walk from Santa Maria Novella. It gives the group an easy orientation point before the first tasting, and a natural place to read the city's morning rhythms: bakeries opening, and the streets filling with Florentines going about their day.

• 2nd stop

  Cantucci Workshop

  Our first tasting takes us into a small cantucci workshop, where the almond biscuits are baked and sliced on the premises. We try them still warm while the baker explains the dough and the double baking that gives them their snap, and the visit opens the tour with the sweet side of the Florentine table.

• 3rd stop

  Mercato Centrale

  Inside the Mercato Centrale we follow the locals from stall to stall, starting with fresh fruit and vegetables and moving on to olive oil and truffles. It is the busiest stage of the walk, and the clearest look at how the city shops, seasons its food, and feeds itself every morning.

• 4th stop

  Cheese and Truffle Tasting

  Cheese and truffle share a counter here: pecorino, aged wheels, and truffles whose aroma fills the shop as soon as a jar is opened. We taste through a small selection and learn to tell the everyday from the precious, and why Tuscany keeps both on the same shelf.

• 5th stop

  Traditional Bakery

  At a traditional bakery the group tries what comes out of the oven through the day: bread with a dark crust and a soft crumb, and simple baked bites eaten standing up, the way Florentines do at mid morning. It is a short stop, and one of the most local of the walk.

• 6th stop

  Church of San Lorenzo and Medici Chapels

  We stop outside the church of San Lorenzo and the Medici Chapels, the family's parish church and burial place. From the square we read the unfinished facade and the dome behind it, and follow how one banking family shaped the architecture, the art, and the politics of the city for three centuries.

• 7th stop

  Restaurant Tasting

  At a family restaurant the tasting turns to the table: crostini and salumi to start, then pasta served the way the kitchen makes it for its own regulars. It is the sit down moment of the tour, and the point where the dishes and the neighborhoods we have crossed start to make sense together.

• 8th stop

  Baptistery

  The Baptistery stands opposite the Cathedral, its white and green marble panels and gilded doors marking the spot where generations of Florentines were baptized. We look at the exterior and at the door known as the Gates of Paradise, and trace how the city's merchants paid for both the faith and the prestige it carried.

• 9th stop

  Historic Wine Bar

  A historic wine bar gives the group a pause among old bottles and marble counters, with crostini and salumi to taste while the room fills around us. The stop is about atmosphere as much as food, and it shows how small these places stay even when the city outside is at its busiest.

• 10th stop

  Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

  We walk around the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore from the outside, following the marble facade and looking up to Brunelleschi's dome and Giotto's Bell Tower. The scale explains why the city spent more than a century on it, and the square lets the group see how baptistery, bell tower, and cathedral read together.

• 11th stop

  Gelato Shop

  The last sweet stop is a gelateria, where the gelato is made in house and the flavors follow the season rather than the freezer. We close the tasting here, with a cup or a cone in hand, before the short walk to the final stop of the route.

• 12th stop

  Casa di Dante

  We end at the house of Dante, a small medieval corner on Via Santa Margherita where the poet's family is said to have lived. It closes the walk where the city's language and politics begin, and connects the food we tasted with the Florence that Dante described and argued with.
